Ethiopia’s Oromia co-op aims to help small-scale coffee farmers take advantage of the Fair Trade coffee market, as a viable alternative trade strategy. The co-op was established in 1999 in order to help the 100,000 farmer families working in Oromia cooperatives to get through the difficult price crisis. It comprises 120 cooperatives, 27 of which are now certified Fair Trade Organic and it is from these 27 co-ops that we buy all our coffee. The programme currently returns around 70 percent of its gross profits back to the Fair Trade cooperatives, in order to help co-op members.
